About Tony
Anthony “Tony” Marano was the heart of the Wrentham Developmental Center, known by many as “the mayor” because he truly never met a stranger. He had a way of lighting up a room the moment he walked in. Always with a big smile, a quick laugh, and a magnetic energy that drew people close.
Tony’s life was rooted in service. For more than 40 years, he dedicated himself to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities at the Wrentham Developmental Center. He began as a Direct Care Worker in 1979 and rose through the years to serve as Director of Training and Volunteer Services before retiring in 2020. Tony also organized and ran the annual Cracker-Barrel Fair in Wrentham for over 20 years. A tradition that brings the community together and directly supports the individuals who live at WDC.
Tony was not only a leader, but also a mentor and friend to countless colleagues. Even after retirement, his commitment to helping others never stopped, because caring for people wasn’t just a career, it was who he was.
What made Tony special wasn’t only his professional dedication, but the way he showed up for people. He always had time to answer a question, lend a hand, or make sure no one felt left out. He believed in lifting people up, and that belief touched friends, coworkers, neighbors, and the wider community.
The Anthony Marano Memorial Scholarship was created to carry forward that spirit. Each year, it supports a student who shares Tony’s passion for helping others, ensuring that his legacy of compassion, humor, and generosity lives on in the next generation of human service professionals.
